Our Story

Humble Beginnings

We've been working in coffee for over 4 years as both baristas and coffee roasters, in that time we've grown accustomed to making, serving and drinking fantastic coffee. Our main goal is simple - make great tasting coffee that leaves a smile on the face of the people that drink it.

Who are we?

Floating Goat Coffee is a micro coffee roastery based in Newcastle upon Tyne.

Our collection of coffee might be small but that's because we value quality over quantity, this allows us to fully focus on our roast profile and bring out the most flavour from each individual coffee that we provide.

Name Origin

Our name origin plays homage to the ‘Goat story’ where legend has it coffee was discovered by goats, or more so by an Ethiopian goatherd by the name of Kaldi in 850 AD who found his goats energetic and dancing eating a red berry from a bush, intrigued Kaldi tried some for himself. Impacted by the same stimulated effects as the goats he danced alongside his livestock. Upon taking his newly found berries to a nearby village, a monk ‘herd’ the story and shunned it calling it ‘devil’s work’ and cast the beans into a fire! This gave off an alluring aroma where the beans were ordered to be raked off the flames and diluted into hot water creating a cup of coffee. The story wasn't recorded until sometime in the 17th century so whether or not how much of the story is true is up for debate but it's a nice little story.
